Ill Read Genre (As Long as Its Foreign) A Story of Snobbery

Ill Read Genre (As Long as Its Foreign) A Story of Snobbery I recently paid a visit to Fountain Bookstore in Richmond, Virginia, where I purchased the South Korean literary mystery Please Look After Mom   by Kyung-sook Shin on the recommendation of the bookstores owner, Kelly Justice. While I was in the store, Kelly also recommended the Japanese crime novel The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashi, which I quickly added to my Im Allowed to Buy This Book Once I Finish the Twenty Books Waiting to be Read on my Nightstand list. Im so excited about reading these books in a way I am rarely (if ever) excited about reading literary mysteries and crime novels. And then it hit me. The operative phrases arent mystery and crime, theyre Japanese and South Korean. Im a little bit of a snob and Im okay with the internet at large knowing this. In bookstores, as I pass by romance, mysteries, thrillers, chick lit, dick lit, and YA, I tilt my head, narrow my eyes, and open my mouth ever so slightly, the international facial   expression of mean girls everywhere. I judge these genres and I judge them hard. I remind you that this is a two way street here, and I welcome you to judge me back. I read literary fiction, narrative non-fiction with sociological leanings, essays and poetry. Im the no-fun English major library mouse who read in my dorm study lounge while everyone else got drunk at frat house jungle-themed parties and made out on rooftops under the stars and jumped the fence of the university pool and went swimming   in their underwear and all the other fun things I imagine everyone else was doing while I was reading in my dorm study lounge. I judge genre UNTIL it becomes foreign genre and then all of a sudden Im like BOOM! Bring on the Dutch Chick Lit. Ka-pow! Bam, bam, yes, maam, I am ALL ABOUT South African YA. A bodice-ripping romance novel from Bolivia? Lock and load, its go time. Note that I basically just made up these sub-genres. But if they exist, I am so much more likely to read them than their Born in the USA counterparts. I can try to give   myself the benefit of the doubt. If a foreign genre book makes it into American translation, if enough readers over there made publishers think enough readers would want to read that book over here,   its got to have some kind of literary superpowers to make it across continents and oceans. This argument quickly falls apart, though, as I   think of all the bestselling American commercial fiction I DONT want to read. This isnt a numbers game. This is a nose-in-the-air-stick-up-my-you-know-what-snob-snob-snobbery game between me, my credit card, and the publishing industry. The foreign factor gives these genres something my reading sensibilities feel is lacking. Im not saying these genres ARE lacking. Keep your pants on, people. Im saying theyre lacking for me. There is a silver lining to my snot-nosed ways and thats this: I wouldnt read genre AT ALL if I wasnt reading imports. What made Girl with the Dragon Tattoo an enjoyable read for me wasnt the mystery, it was how fing Swedish those books are. I listened to them on audiobook, which was a bonus treat, as I could not get enough of the narrator saying Blomkvist and Wennerstrom, that ish was like ear candy for me. Im a bit of a girl adventurer; my caked-with-sweat-and-dirt-and-who-knows-what-else backpackers backpack sits in the corner of my closet, always waiting to be packed. A foreign book feels like an almost-trip to whatever country it was written in. An almost-adventure, if you will. And an almost-adventure, well that transcends both genre and my iron-clad snobbery. And Im more than okay with that. Sign up to Unusual Suspects to receive news and recommendations for mystery/thriller readers. Thank you for signing up! Keep an eye on your inbox.

Essay about Lincoln on Leadership - 1125 Words

Lincoln on Leadership I start this project on Lincoln’s leadership very reluctantly. I am a history buff and have always viewed his leadership through the eyes of jaded historians. They have portrayed him as a dictator, incompetent, and a buffoon at some points. After reading the Donald T. Phillips book Lincoln on Leadership, my mindset was totally changed. This book broke down four key areas that produced an effective leader in Lincoln. These areas are character, people, endeavor, and communication. I will be sharing a principal from each key area that I found important and then conclude with an overall thought. The first key area in Lincoln’s Leadership was his interaction with people. Historians have often scoffed at the†¦show more content†¦Philips brings to light that once you lose the confidence of others you can never regain their trust. Bruce Avolio (2005) in his book Leadership Development in the Balance backs this principal by the statement, â€Å"There is no doub t that the bar has shifted upward in terms of what is required of leaders to build trust, as well as the impact their mistake has on our trust in them† (pg. 124). Both writers are calling our attention to the fact that we need leaders of integrity in their public leadership as well as their private lives. This life of integrity inspires trust, honesty, and loyalty in those that follow this type of leader. The third key section of leadership is in endeavor. A principal of praise and sharing the brunt of responsibilities from mistakes with followers has been discuss several times in other books as well as my current Ethical Leadership Class. Phillips (pg. 103) points out this principal with, â€Å"When a subordinate did a good job, Lincoln praised, complimented, and rewarded the individual. On the other hand, he shouldered responsibility when mistakes were made.† This aspect of praising and shouldering responsibility causes followers to take risks and to be innovat ing in their approach to the corporate mission and vision. This inspires people around the leader to learn and grow and maybe have the confidence to be a change agent not just a yes person. The fourth key aspect isShow MoreRelatedLincoln s Executive Strategies : Lincoln On Leadership Essay987 Words   |  4 PagesChester-Mar Rihn MSL 201-001 Lincoln’s Executive Strategies Lincoln had many strategies when it came to his leadership, and from the book, â€Å"Lincoln on Leadership,† his ideas and techniques are showcased in detail. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities and women. Congress finally asserted their authority to regulate interstate commerce under Article One (section 8). Their duty is to guarantee all citizens equal protection including African Americans under the laws of the Fourteenth Amendment. Also the fourteenth Amendment protects voting rights under the Fifteenth Amendment, which prohibits the government from denying any citizen the ability, or right to vote based on race or color. For so long African Americans have been held back due to slavery and Jim Crow laws. After Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) racial segregation was necessary in all public facilities under the doctrine of â€Å"separate but equal†. The fact of the matter is that whites and blacks were never equal, just separate. Jim Crow laws were adopted throughout the south to alienate black citizens and physically separate African Americans and whites. These laws institutionalized segregation of African Americans and whites and did not allow access use of the same schools, hospitals, prisons, public parks, housing communities, and even restrooms. Lets remember these facilities were completely unequal. The white facilities were obviously more luxurious in every way, and throughout the whole country it was obvious that in no section blacks were treated equal. The most important goal of these laws was to keep blacks from voting. Whites realized that once blacks were able to vote freely they truly were equal to every citizen. The best way they kept blacks from voting was through literacy tests. Through all the efforts whites were putting to keep blacks from voting they have been successful allowing less than 10% of blacks voting in the south in 1910. These segregation laws stayed until Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which overturned the ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson. The decision stated that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. It was realized after this that racial segregation was ruled a violation of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This decision paved the way for integration in the south and throughout the United States and was a major win in the civil rights movement. Blacks were most successfully when they were organized. The organized bus boycott, sit-ins, freedom rides, and march on Washington brought national attention to the war on civil rights. Martin Luther King Jr. led these events; his â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech is world famous now due to the significance of the civil rights movement. These demonstrations were pivotal for the African American community in declaring their liberty. Finally when the Civil rights Act of 1964 passed along with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, discrimination because of race was outlawed and any color human being could vote. Blacks were finally free and were the true winners of the civil rights movement 1950s and 1960s. They were finally equal and there rights were fully instilled.
